presumably on the grounds of a certain resemblance to Lievens's features as recorded in Van Dyck's 'Iconographie'

it was rightly described in Sparkes and Carver 1890 as a 'wretched painting

of passers-by seeing it in a window and mistaking it for a real flesh and blood girl

A Young Man Frame:none even whiles you looke uponThe panel is a fragment made up with an addition at the bottom (at present concealed by the frame). Attributed in 1813 to Leonardo da Vinci and later to Boltraffio, the attribution to Piero di Cosimo seems now to be generally accepted, although Bacci expresses reservations. A date in the first years of the sixteenth century seems probable.
