Both INSIG1 protein and this protein are endoplasmic reticulum proteins that block the processing of sterol regulatory element binding proteins (SREBPs) by binding to SREBP cleavage activating protein (SCAP), and thus prevent SCAP from escorting SREBPs to the Golgi.
