I let the patterns and the yarn tell me what to knit and how it will be shaped. This hat was a blast to knit. Lots of garter, reverse stockinette, ribbing and shaping. The yarns are all cottons and acrylic. No Wool. It is a knit and will stretch. Measures 22" relaxed but will easily accomodate heads to 24". So this is an average size. The tail is fun to wear
